Holyoke HS Senior Awarded MKL Humanitarian Award January 2008 - Elisa Sagehorn, a senior at Holyoke High School, was among four other individuals and two projects awarded a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, Jan. 17. Sagehorn was nominated for the award by HHS business instructor and FBLA advisor Kristina Ham. In the nomination letter, Ham described Sagehorn as a student who stands out in her mind as Rising to Excellence, fitting of the HHS motto and is a student "always reaching for the next level and pushing herself further." Sagehorn is involved in a number of activities, and has exceeded expectations in the local FBLA chapter. She is one of two chairpersons for the HHS FBLA chapter community project, on which she worked over seven months to organize a telethon to raise money for the Melissa Memorial Hospital building project. With the community's help, the FBLA chapter collected items valued at $3,699.86 to be auctioned off. By the end of the telethon, over $11,000 was collected, and combined with proceeds received preceding the telethon and funds from a silent auction, the total raised was over $26,000. Humanitarian award recipients will be honored at a private reception on Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Boettcher Concert Hall in Denver. A concert by the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will follow at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are available at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library, the Central Denver Library and the Colorado Civil Rights Division.

Virtual Business Challenge December 2007 - Congratulations to team BE Trading of Cheraw High School for qualifying for the National Conference in the Virtual Business Challenge.

 

Members of the Liberty FBLA Chapter challenged members of the Idalia FBLA Chapter to a non-perishable food items competition. What a great way to help out those that are less fortunate than ourselves and have fun doing it.

Members from each school were split into groups in their own schools. Each group had to dress according to a chosen theme, i.e. sports, blackand white, angels, etc. Each group was then given a section of their own community to canvas but they could not leave the boundaries of their own school district. The competition ran from 4:00-6:00, Sunday evening, October 28. The school that collected the least items had to buy the pizza for the party afterwards for the winners. Liberty FBLA members collected 1,849 items with Idalia members collecting 1,660. Food items will be distributed to those less fortunate in our own communities. Remaining items will be donated to DDI in Burlington as well as the Food Bank.

Our communities really supported this project and we do appreciate you all for that. Liberty FBLA members will be helping put the food baskets together in November.
